RÉSON(D)ANCE

Wishing to support creators in these turbulent times, the Kinneksbond, Centre Culturel Mamer, the Luxembourg Chamber Orchestra and the TROIS C-L – Centre de Création Chorégraphique Luxembourgeois launched the call for projects “Réson(d)ance” at the beginning of February with a view to creating two contemporary choreographic pieces based on the musical works Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune by Claude Debussy and La création du monde by Darius Milhaud.

Conducted with the support of the OEuvre Nationale de Secours Grande-Duchesse Charlotte, “Réson(d)ance” will bring musicians and dancers together on stage to explore a flourishing period in French music: the dawn of the 20th century. Under the baton of conductor Corinna Niemeyer and through the prism of these two works written for dance, bodies and instruments will indulge in a lively game of resonance marked by virtuosity.

WINNERS OF THE CALL FOR PROJECTS

Aimed at choreographers and dancers based in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg or showing a commitment to the national artistic and cultural scene, the call for projects attracted a dozen applications. After deliberation, a jury selected the projects led by Jill Crovisier (JC Movement Production) and Rhiannon Morgan (LUCODA – Luxembourg Collective of Dance).

Under the watchful eye of the current director of the Centre national de la danse in Lyon Davy Brun, who will closely follow the choreographers’ creative process, the following two pieces will see the light of day in May 2021, after four weeks of intense rehearsals:

More than a hundred years after Russian choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky’s version glorified male desire, a duo of female dancers will echo – with humour, but also commitment – the current apology for the relentless quest for the perfect female body. Referring to the aerobics sessions broadcast on television in the 1980s and assuming that women today increasingly aspire to transform themselves into nymphs, no matter what the sacrifices, Jill Crovisier and Laura Arend will make a dialogue between eras, in counterpoint to Debussy’s music and Nijinsky’s original intention.

In African mythology, the Earth is seen as a woman, source of creation. Five female performers will embody the five senses and the five elements through the six-part narrative of the original musical score. In a chaos of complex movements, these bodies will interact through their own unique body vocabulary and then merge in harmony to form a whole, reflecting the essence of human existence, beyond differences. Fully integrated with the musicians of the orchestra, the dancers will merge with the instruments in a perfect unity reflecting the basic constitution common to every human being.
