For this new professional class, Maya Balam Meyong will teach the Horton Technique, incorporating elements of her own movement practice, during the week of March 17–21, 2025.
The Horton Technique is a dancer’s training method developed by American modern dancer and choreographer Lester Horton in the first half of the 20th century. The technique focuses on the entire body through an approach of flexibility, strength, coordination, and control of the body in space to release expression.
Following the typical structure of a Horton class, Maya will provide dancers with the tools, knowledge, and historical context needed to embody this modern dance technique while adapting it to their own bodies and needs.
Join us for a week of exploration, rigor, generosity, knowledge, laughter, and commitment to the simple state of being!
About Maya Balam Meyong
Originally from Belgium and of Cameroonian descent, Maya Balam Meyong is a dancer (currently with the Akram Khan Company), creator, and artistic director of the movement-based art collective The Dancing Society.
She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Dance from the PSPBB/Université de Paris 8, as well as professional training and teaching programs with Rick Odum through a scholarship. A former student of the Springboard Dance Montreal and the Jacob’s Pillow Contemporary Program, Maya is also a recipient of the Vocatio Foundation and the Little Dreams Foundation of Phil Collins. Maya has attended several programs at the Alvin Ailey and Martha Graham schools. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law and Philosophy from Saint-Louis University in Belgium (thesis: Poetics of the Invisible: Towards a Dialogical Philosophy of Dance).
After graduating, Maya moved to Brussels, where she danced for various choreographers while beginning to develop her own artistic vision, works, and projects. She co-founded The Dancing Society, a collective at the intersection of dance and various art forms, as well as Perpetuum Mobile, an international dance festival based in Brussels.
Now based in New York, where she joined the CR Dance Company, Maya has been deeply influenced by Gaga and physical theater, as well as her own personal movement research. This experience solidified her desire to create movement-based works and direct productions alongside her performing career.
Maya is currently performing with the Akram Khan Company as part of the international tour of The Jungle Book Reimagined. In the upcoming season, Maya will also assist Luxembourgish choreographer Jil Crovisier on the production The Game Grand Finale and focus on creating a new environmental project titled The Undergrounds of the Possible.
